Volunteers are an integral and crucial component to the success of The Santos Great Bike Ride for Charity. As a volunteer not only will you be contributing to this success but also assisting three great charities to continue their life saving work: Heart Foundation WA, Hope for Children and Horizon House.
Volunteer roles include:
Ride Kit Packing & Distribution (the week of the event) - Ride Kit Packing PDF
Volunteers are required to assist with ride kit packing and distribution in the Event Shop in the week leading up to the event. The Event Shop will be located at Langley Park and volunteers will be required to undertake a minimum shift length of two hours (you may do more than this if you wish!).
Road Marshals - Road Marshalls PDF
Two or more Road Marshals are required at each intersection around the course of The Santos Great Bike Ride for Charity [53km]. Your job as a Marshal is to inform motorists of the community bike ride and that there may be slight delays. You are not required to direct traffic and you are not required to get into any discussions with drivers regarding to road closures. You will be needed at your position for a set time and will be relieved by operational management crews throughout the event as the Roads are reopened behind the last participant. It is important that you are able to remain at your location for the duration of the required time frame to ensure the safety of the event participants. Road Marshals must be 18+ unless they are accompanied by a guardian.
Event Village Assistant - Event Village Assistant PDF
Volunteers are required to assist with operations at the Event Village before, during and after the event. Tasks required at Langley Park involve: crowd control, water distribution, collection of timing bands and assistance at the start/finish line of the event.
Medic Drivers - Medic Drivers PDF
Several key volunteers are required on the day of the event to drive the medics around the course. You will need to be 18+ for this role, possess a current Western Australian driver’s license and demonstrate that you have the ability to remain calm and in control in potentially stressful situations.
Volunteer Supervisors - Volunteer Supervisors PDF
Volunteer supervisors are required on the event course to essentially look after the Road Marshals. This role involves checking that all volunteers are in place before the event starts and then delivering refreshments and ensuring that the Marshals are happy and vigilant throughout the period of the event.
Water Stop Attendants - Water Stop Attendants PDF
Volunteers are required to man and assist riders at the three water stops along the course of The Santos Great Bike Ride. The locations for the three stops are:
- Mosman Park;
- Bayview Tce [Carpark near Owston Street]
- Attadale; Burke Drive [Opposite Haig Road]
- South Perth; South Perth Esplanade Carpark
There will be a number of different start times for Volunteers depending on the role nominated. The earliest start time will be 5.30 am with the latest role commencing at 6.45 am. End times vary, especially for those Volunteers undertaking Marshalling positions. The latest finish time is generally around 12.00 noon.
In appreciation for your time Volunteers will receive an official shirt, refreshments throughout the course of the event and a certificate of appreciation.
